CREATIVE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER DERBYSHIRE
Documentary Wedding Photography
Where are you based?
I am based in Derbyshire; however I am happy to travel anywhere in the U.K or beyond.
How should I choose a wedding photographer?
You should choose your wedding photographer based on a number of factors including their style, their character and their services. Your wedding photographs are one on a few things things that provide a lasting reminder of your special day long after the wedding day. It is very important that you get on well with the photographer, and that you trust them.
How not to choose a wedding photographer?
I would recommend that you don’t choose a photographer purely on price and equipment. It is more important that your happy and comfortable with the photographer and they will provide the types of photographs that you want for your wedding.
What is your style of photography?
A wedding day is a unique collection of special moments for you, your family and special guests. They are at their very best when they are natural and I can capture the essence of the moment. By capturing these moments and the feelings they create, it becomes more memorable in years to come. My aim is to capture the naturally unfolding story as a quiet observer. I never ask people to pose, although I do accommodate posed shots if requested.
Documentary, reportage or photojournalistic are more about the approach to capture an image rather than an actual style of photography. In my case, documentary photography is more about telling your story told through the eyes of the observer.
Can we meet you before deciding to discuss our wedding plans?
Of course and I recommend this for each prospective client. It is important for both of us to meet and discuss the wedding as well as get to know one another. I prefer to meet at the wedding venue (if possible) so that we can discuss your photography needs and also walk through your plans for the day. It helps me understand what your special day will look like. Most couples are still finalising their plans and I am flexible and adapt to their needs all the way up to the day itself. So whether you have booked me or not, I would love to talk about your wedding photography. Once you have booked me, we can again meet at the wedding venue, or at a wedding rehearsal, or both. If a meeting proves to be logistically impossible, bookings can also be made via e-mail.
Are your consultations free?
Of course, it costs nothing to talk to people. I welcome the opportunity to meet couples to discuss their photography needs at their weeding. It’s an opportunity to get to know one another and it helps me understand what you are looking for and whether my photography style suits your needs. Just use my contact page to get in touch.
Do we get to choose what images we would like taking prior to our wedding day?
I always provide each client with a pre-wedding questionnaire as a starting guide which helps develop a draft shooting plan that can be changed and adapted as the wedding approaches. It provides useful points to consider throughout the day as well as providing me with an overview and timeline of your special day. There maybe a very special family gift you would like photographed; or a special relative or friend has flown in for the wedding and you would like some specific portraits or even you want to recreate a school photo with your oldest friends.
Do you take any formal posed photographs such as family and friend group shots?
I am happy to accommodate a number of group photographs as these are important images to yourselves, your family and guests. I always ask clients to complete a pre-wedding questionnaire so I can develop a draft shooting plan and ask that they change as they wish but at the same time keep in mind that the larger the number of group photographs, the more time this will take. The shoot plan also includes a list of your family and friends names so that it is easier to bring people together. Having a family member or close friend who knows all the guests and has a copy of the shooting plan can really help bring people together quickly and means the formal posed shots don't impose too much on your special day.
Will you take portraits of just the two of us?
If you would like to have a number of wedding portraits taken, then I would be delighted to capture them for you. As part of the pre-wedding planning process and our meeting at the wedding venue, we can scout the various locations where you would like some wedding portraits that you really like and perhaps I can add in a few more for your consideration. On the wedding day and at a time that best suits your day, we can steal you away from the reception for a breather. We can visit those special places at the venue and let you take some private moments together whilst I take some discreet photographs. I can also make some suggestions that best suits the location to encapsulate the moment and your love for one another.
Do you shoot film or digital?
With the flexibility offered with digital photography technology, I have transferred to a fully digital operation.
Do you edit all your photographs?
Absolutely, every image is reviewed and edited by myself. I deliver to you print-ready high resolution images for your personal use.
Can some of my photographs be delivered in both black and white and colour?
I will provide a complete set of both colour and black and white images unless you specifically request black and white only. The original digital images are in colour and are converted to converted to black and white in the post processing of the images. Many images have a greater impact in black and white and can bring an different dimension to the subject matter.
How long does it take to receive our photographs?
This mainly depends on how many photographs have been taken. I edit every single image, therefore the more images the longer this process takes. If is safe to calculate approximately 150 images a week. In this age of social media, I know that many couples want to share some images with their family and friends and so I endeavour to edit a few select images and forward these within a few days of the wedding. Once all the high resolution images have been edited they are uploaded to the website in a password protected private gallery. I will send you a link to the gallery along with the password so you can view them at your leisure individually or as a slideshow as well as create a set of favourites. Ordering of any prints can also be done online where one or a number of images can be selected in a variety of sizes (and even cropped if desired). Once your happy, they can be purchased and our professional photographic printers will print off your images and post them directly to the address provided.
What is the ‘Online Gallery’ you mention?
The ‘Online Gallery’ is a convenient way for you to view your photographs in the comfort of your own home using the internet. We shall create a private gallery that is password protected and all your wedding images will be kept here for you and your family and friends to view. Once the photographs have been uploaded to the gallery, we shall send to you the website link and the password to access the gallery which you can then forward on to any family and friends should you wish to do so.
How do my family and guests order prints from our wedding?
Ordering prints from your online gallery is made simple and convenient in the comfort of your own home and delivered directly to your door. No need to take any images on a CD to a local print shop. The copyright is still retained by the photographer.
Who owns copyright of the photographs?
All photographs produced are copyright owned by the photographer. All the photographs provided to you are for personal use and more specifically not for any commercial gain (either sold or passed on to any suppliers).
How long do you keep images for?
All the wedding images are kept on multiple back-up drives for as long as I can maintain the system.
BEFORE THE WEDDING AND ON THE WEDDING DAY
Do you do an Engagement shoot?
Yes. These shoots are best taken in familiar surrounding to you that makes you both comfortable and we can capture your personalities. They can be on your favourite walk in a local park or with your family. I try to keep them as natural as possible and capture those special moments and utilise our surroundings to bring some context of where we are. The Engagement shoot also provides a great opportunity to relax in front of the camera so that on your wedding day your more than relaxed about having me around. I am happy to discuss these on an individual client basis so please use my contact page to get in touch.
What time do you arrive and when do you leave?
I am more than happy to provide a full day coverage of your wedding day without any limitations. I believe that the wedding day is a collection of short stories that make up the whole wedding experience, and to capture the full story, I must be there for its entirety. I normally start with the preparations in the morning and I continue to photograph until the late evening. I can also provide an hourly based package for couples who, for any reason, don’t need a full day coverage.
Do you work with an assistant or second photographer?
I mainly photograph weddings on my own, and I very comfortable and confident working that way as we would have worked out in advance what you want and I will know the timeline for the day. However, if you are having a larger wedding with lots of guests, it is advisable to have a second photographer for even better coverage which I can arrange.
Do we need to feed you on our wedding day?
It would be really lovely if your did but I don’t expect this. Sometimes the venue can provide a ‘vendor meal’ and hopefully some food means I don’t go wildly hungry. This does not have to be in the same room as your meal. I prefer to feed when you are and not afterwards as people are not their most photogenic when eating and it can be disconcerting. When you’re done, I want to be done as well to continue your coverage. I leave the decision to provide food up to you and as long as I know in advance, I can prepare accordingly.
What happens if it rains?
Of course we all hope that the day will be perfect but there are some things that you just cannot change and the weather is one of these. As part of our early preparations it is worth discussing options at the venue should this be case. We can of course change our plans on the day to accommodate the weather conditions providing that is something your happy with. I use professional equipment which is weather sealed and sometimes the wind and rain can create visually interesting situations and can add an extra dimension to your photographs.
Can our family and friends take pictures with their cameras?
Of course they can. All I ask is that they don’t swarm the family group photographs as I would prefer to have all eyes facing me when I take the photograph. I would ask that if and when you want to take a breather so we can capture the wedding portraits that we do this alone with no family or guests, because, frankly, other people can be distracting! I welcome other people taking photographs during other times in the day and all I would ask is that they are respectful that I am there for you both and please don’t push me out of the way and respect my presence and I will do the same.
Do you have any insurance?
As a professional photographer, I carry Public Liability Insurance up to £5 million.
What kind of equipment do you use?
Since I started using digital photographic equipment, I use professional Canon equipment and have a selection of lenses and other equipment that I can use to capture the image I am after. I also use an Apple Mac computer for post processing of the images.
Can you provide the wedding venue with a copy of your Certificate of Insurance?
If the wedding venue wishes to see a copy of my Public Liability Insurance, I would be happy to provide one in advance (preferably a couple of months in advance of the wedding and not on the day) to assure them of my cover.
Do you have a written contract?
Yes. A written contract assures both parties and gives peace of mind which is important in helping you to enjoy your special day. The contract is fair and represents both parties.
How long have you been in business?
I started taking photographic commissions back in 2010 and since then I have captured images from a variety so events - sports, social and weddings. I sincerely love taking wedding photographs and being given the privilege to share a couples very special day and capture their story. It is a very joyful occasion and I love meeting people as they come together to celebrate the special day.
What is your pricing?
I absolutely understand wanting to find out pricing without having to ask. My rates are not listed on the website for public viewing for a variety of reasons. I can honestly say that each wedding is unique and it really depends on how long you would like me to be there and where the wedding will take place. I prefer to discuss in person your individual needs and then give you a price that reflects those needs. Please feel free to contact me should you wish to discuss this further.
BOOKING AND CONTRACT
Can you hold our wedding date for us?
I am sorry, but I can’t "hold the date" or "pencil you in". To be fair to everyone I can’t “hold” a date without a deposit and a signed contract. I accept bookings on a first come/first served basis.
What is your payment schedule?
The booking deposit is twenty percent of the overall quote and is payable at the time of the booking. The remainder is due one calendar month prior to the wedding date. I know that around this time you will have a lot of things happening in your preparations, so to make life easier I will send you a reminder just prior to the last calendar month.
If I need to cancel my wedding, are any payments refunded?
In this case the deposit and all monies paid are non-refundable. The deposit ensures that the date is exclusively blocked out for your wedding and once you have signed the contract I would turn down all other commissions for your wedding.
When should we book you for our wedding?
Once your happy with what I can offer, I would suggest booking as soon as possible to ensure the date is confirmed for your wedding. I can’t “hold” or “pencil you in” to be fair to everyone that would like to commission me for their wedding.
Are there any additional travel costs?
If your wedding is going to take place far away from where I live, I may require accommodation for the evening before the wedding to make sure I don’t get held up by any transport issues on my way to the wedding on the day. Regardless of the location, travel expenses only apply when the cost will exceed £50. My prices are quoted on an individual basis and with booking me in advance, it is possible to seek accommodation and tickets many months before the wedding date which can keep costs to a minimum.
What happens if you die?
If I die, I can guarantee I will not be at your wedding! Albeit rather sad for my family and friends that does not alleviate the situation that I will not be there to take your wedding photographs. As a professional photographer there are a number of organisations that can be called up on to seek a replacement photographer for your day. I am associated with Find A Wedding Photographer and there are alternatives to view.
